Romancing SaGa 2 is Square Enix's remaster of the 1993 Super Famicom RPG, built around a generations-long war against the Seven Heroes. You rule the Varennes Empire as a succession of emperors rather than a single fixed protagonist.
How does imperial succession work?
When an emperor falls in battle or dies of old age, you choose a successor, and the new ruler inherits the previous emperor's techniques and spells. That makes the royal line stronger over time and opens goals that were out of reach earlier.
What can you do between battles?
Characters learn new techniques through Glimmers, formations change stats and how likely a character is to be targeted, and you can temper weapons, concoct new spells and build a university in Avalon. The remaster also adds updated backgrounds, new battle animations, four new dungeons, the Avalonian Gardens and New Game+.
